Western & Southern Open 2022

Serena’s back (and she’s been training on Laykold)

The 2022 Western & Southern Open gets underway at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre from the 13th to the 21st of August, marking Laykold’s third year as the Official Court Surface of the famous tournament.

Prestige predictor for the US Open

Part of the ATP Masters 1000, WTA 1000 and US Open Series, the W&S (also affectionately known as ‘Cincy’) is the oldest professional tournament in the US, and is widely regard as an predictor of form for the US Open (which starts this year in late August).

The impressive list of W&S winners who have claimed victory at the same year’s US Open includes tennis legends such as Ken Rosewall, Stan Smith, John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Pat Rafter, Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams.

Serena Williams is back (for the last time)

The best leave no stone unturned, and with both Serena and Venus Williams returning to W&S, crowds are guaranteed some great tennis. Serena Williams chooses to train on her personal Laykold Masters Gel court, because she wanted a court that replicated the US Open conditions and provides superior (17%) force reduction.

Serena Williams v Emma Raducanu in the first round is wonderful twist of fate… the greatest verses a future great.

The wildcard returns

Adding his own special brand of energy to the 2022 W&S will be Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, fresh from a purple patch that’s included reaching the Wimbledon final in July, and winning the Citi Open earlier this month.

Kyrgios was awarded a wildcard to compete at this year’s tournament, and he will certainly be one to watch as he serves his way to an eventual tilt at the US Open.

Pace Precision – measured in decimal points

This is Laykold’s third year as the Official Court Surface of the tournament, having proven ourselves with unrivalled know-how and technological skill (such as last year’s courts being partly made with recycled tennis balls).

Other court surfaces measure pace consistency in whole numbers (as part of the ITF pace ratings), whereas we measure pace consistency across an event in decimal points. This game-changing Pace Precision allows us to the match the tournaments’ desired pace with exceptional accuracy, which gives players total trust in the surface.

Home advantage – Laykold is the only Grand Slam surface made in the USA

Sport is no stranger to the phenomenon of a home advantage. A tennis court’s performance, just like a player’s, is impacted by whether or not it has had to travel and whether it is in its natural environment or has to acclimatise.

A locally made court has the home advantage. As the only Grand Slam surface made in the USA, Australia or Germany in ISO certified factories, Laykold offers a local advantage across three continents.

Trusted and chosen

Laykold, the official surface of the W&S Open, is the leading global court brand and offers the world’s widest range of court surfacing systems, which is why we’re trusted and chosen by 8 of the top 14 hard court pro tour events in USA and Canada, including the US Open.
