The statistics are striking
Over 100 million balls each year end up in US landfill

The US Open changes balls every nine games per match, which adds up to 70,000 balls per tournament.
Recycling balls is therefore a crucial issue for tennis to address, as more and more emphasis is placed on the health of the environment.
To showcase the issue and what can be done, a joint initiative between the United States Tennis Association (USTA), Recycled Balls, Wilson Tennis and Laykold was formed to recycle the balls from the 2020 US Open and the 2020 Western & Southern Open.
The balls were collected from the events and sent to Recycle Balls for processing.
Laykold, which is the only court surface brand to use recycled balls, then added these balls in to the re-surfacing of the Grandstand Court at the 2021 W&S Open.
So last year’s balls, which had been served, sliced and volleyed by stars such as Serena Williams, Dominic Thiem and Naomi Osaka, have become ‘this year’s courts.’
Outside of this initiative, Laykold recycles more than 3500 tennis balls in the shock absorption mats used in Laykold Masters 5, and over 7000 balls in Laykold Masters 8.
In the USA Laykold partners with Wilson and Recycle Balls, and in Europe we partner with Tennis Point for ball recycling. We are also working with Tennis Canada to recycle balls from the 2022 Canadian Open.
