Green Laykold courts revitalise tennis club in the Blue Mountains
How Mount Riverview’s eco court innovation signals an advantage for clubs across Australia
On 21 October 2023, Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill officially opened the upgraded courts at Mount Riverview tennis club. The US Open-quality Laykold Float courts mark a step by the club to rejuvenate its facilities to drive club membership, accessibility and participation.
Blue Mountains Club goes Green
The iconic blue courts mark a performance boost for the club but there is also a significant environmental benefit to the Sydney community. Designed to lay directly over the club’s worn out synthetic grass courts, the Laykold courts saved about 40 tons of non-biodegradable waste material from going into landfill. With a lifespan of over two decades, the longevity of the courts also ensure they fill years and years of playing time rather than landfill.
Second-Life product gives club a second life
Laykold hardcourts are already a second-life product, using recycled materials in the shock absorption system that provides more than 20 percent force reduction. This reduces both player injury and the negative impact of the sport on the environment.
A lower cost option for clubs
As well as a lower environmental cost, avoiding the removal of the old grass courts provides a financial cost saving during the project delivery which is further extended by increased club revenues driven by the upgraded facilities.
Courts provide a club, player and environmental advantage
Laykold’s Scott Windus, a former tennis pro and ITF-award-winning coach, is also the club’s secretary who championed the project:
“I’ve been in tennis all my life and I just cannot drive by a court that isn’t busy and wonder – why? Mount Riverview is my local club and I was determined to help revitalise this dilapidated centre and dwindling membership to make tennis more fun and accessible for the local community.
Although I have spent 40+ years on tennis courts, playing and coaching, my time at Laykold has taught me the true value of the courts for the community. A great court safeguards player welfare, keeps players playing for longer and drives club revenues.
Upgrading the surface at Mount Riverview has helped us to enhance the club’s image; in little over a year we increased membership from 20 to 180 and with the help of our green innovation, achieved all this with the smallest possible negative impact on the environment.”
Advantage All for clubs across Australia
The advantage does not stop at Mount Riverview. What one club has proven is the significant cost, environmental, and performance advantage there is for clubs across Australia to benefit from as the Australian summer tennis season enters full swing. Local R&D and manufacturing, with the benefit of global expertise and skilled local installation teams, Laykold Courts provide an Advantage All.
